How To Add Travel Time to Any Road Trip
Yeah...so...there was going to be a post about my newest obsession, the revival of Doctor Who, which I have been able to see thanks to wonders of Canadian TV. And then I was going to write about the greatest Bat-film ever, Batman Begins, which has totally won over an old time Batfan such as myself.
Alas, who has time these days when you're "in charge" at work due to vacation schedules and trying to get ready for your own vacation.
But first, a few words on the good Doctor. If you are reading this in the US, chances are you've not seen this as, much like soccer, we are pretty much the only country who did not pick this up. (Though mind you, I don't disagree when it comes to soccer...vile dark cloud that causes parents to threaten coaches and other parents with physical violence in the name of bettering your child) And that is a true shame, because this is an amazing work of television.
Those who remember the old Doctor Who surely remember it's charm: the cheesy special effects and low budget production, the long scarf (probably the most memorable of outfits for any of the Doctors), and yes, not necessarily the best acting (if you can't do an American accent, please don't try.) But wipe that off the board because this new show is just outstanding. With a large budget, great stories and most importantly, characterization as well as actors who can truly pull it off, this new show is not just an amazing Doctor Who show, it's amazing TV. With the best of the old (EX-TER-MIN-ATE), the introduction of real, honest emotional content (just what does the Doctor really feel when faced with seemingly certain death?), this show has well surpassed it's predecessors and also much of what's on TV today.
How do I know it's such a great series? Well, it passed the one test that few science-fiction based shows ever have: it actually got Lisa to watch an episode all the way through (the unbelieveable season finale, with one of the best and emotional REMOVED FOR SPOILER scenes of any of the previous 8 Doctors.)
And speaking of being able to watch it in Canada, I need to answer that above question. The easiest way to turn a 3 1/2-4 hour drive to Toronto is easy: just add kids! Plan on an additional hour per kid and you get an accurate assessment of just how long a road trip will take! Mind you, traffic in Windsor as everyone gets out early for Canada Day doesn't help.
But one thing about Canada: people here really seem fascinated and interested in your kids. It's actually wonderful as they come up and just ask you about them and talk to you. Nothing suspicious or anything...just kindness to total strangers in this country. That and smaller portions of food in the restaurants...which is probably a good thing in this super-sized world! Of course, smaller sizes of poutine are just as artery clogging.
