Phat and Tight

It's always a joy to see people perform at a high level. Last night we had just such an opportunity as Steely Dan came to town. Since they really didn't tour much, the Dan had always been sort of an enigma to me, which raised my curiosity and desire to see them play live. To me, it was not unlike the Alan Parsons Project-a studio entity that never seemed to perform live, thereby adding to their mystique. (Incidentally, the Parsons Project did eventually tour, but I missed that one.)

After missing them on their last few tours, my chance finally came last night and I was not disappointed. Steely Dan are known for their sonic mastery. On record, the sound is just so full and rich. That they can reproduce and augment that sound in a live environment is nothing short of a tribute to their amazing talent.

There is a difference between a musical performance and a jukebox. Most concerts are a jukebox, with bands playing to their audience with a greatest hits package. There's nothing wrong with that, and it's an enjoyable time, but Steely Dan is one of those that transcend that, mixing new material seamlessly in with classic tunes that don't necessarily show up on the hits album. The semi-casual Steely Dan fan is likely familiar with tunes such as "Reeling In The Years" and "Do It Again." Yet the band itself is confident enough in their show to display their chops without playing those common denominator songs, all with a pretty wicked sense of humor.

One thing's for sure. In this world of stylish, flash-in-the-pan one hit wonders with more pyrotechnics and lasers than a Dr. Evil scheme, it's great to know that there are musicians out there with true chops.
