The Next Wave
It's becoming "crunch time," so last weekend we finally started recovering all our old baby stuff to prepare for our new arrival. Right about now, we feel good that we have about the minimum we absolutely need should the little one decide to show up early. The infant car seat is in the van (not to mention the van is fixed after suffering yet another transmission fluid leak...so glad the takeover of Chrysler yielded much better quality vehicles), the crib is made up and there's actually space to move around in the baby's room.
All this preparation can't help but bring back memories of what it was like to have a baby around the house. As a way of preparing Christie even more, we've been showing her the DVDs of her as a baby and she's completely fascinated by them. That plus all the rummaging through the boxes to recover all the baby toys has been a jaunt down memory lane. The swing, the little electronic puppy dog, the Fisher Price aquarium, the "It's a Small World" wind up mobile...toys that were not only educational, but as we found out in hindsight from watching the videos, also brought out her personality in the way she played with them.
The DVDs have captured lots of things that I hadn't thought of in years. Feeding her with a spoon in her high chair, which she took to so easily. Moments when I've been drooled on, which reminded me that I learned never to hold a baby above your head while opening your mouth. Getting the infant seat out reminded me of all the times we carted little Christie around in it, particularly the time when just before we walked out the door, the air in her tummy caused an Exorcist-like projectile barfing incident.
Funny how the gross memories seem to be the most vivid.
Very soon, the cycle will start over again. Sleepless nights, pure joy, drool, diaper changes, squeals and giggles (some from the baby). This baby will have the benefit of the experiences with Christie, but certainly will throw a number of curveballs that we haven't seen. Maybe she won't take to the spoon as quickly, or maybe he'll take a liking to any sharp items within reach. Either way, it'll certainly be a new twist to the ride.
After all, you're not really parents if you only have one kid. At least that's what people like to tell us.
