Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

There are very few concerts that you actually feel privileged to be at. Simon and Garfunkel was one of them. After all, it is not very often you can be in the presence of artists who can legitimately claim to have influenced thousands, entertained millions, and generally help shaped popular music.

But even though the duo have not put out new music in decades, it certainly did not mean their show was going to be dated. With the help of the latest technology to provide video and dramatic lighting, they put on a great show. But realistically, the harmonies that the two can create could have sustained the show by itself.

This was a show full of magical moments. Certainly one was during "America," when the beauty of their voices came to the lines "Michigan seems like a dream to me now/It took me 6 days to hitchhike from Saginaw." Something about that moment, between the music and the crowd erupting in anticipation of the homage to our state, just seemed more perfect than any other. And just as an added bonus, the Everly Brothers made a special appearance midway through the show, performing their own short set and then together with Simon and Garfunkel.

And though the duo seemed to start out somewhat stiff in terms of relating to the audience (after all, this was their first show of the tour in front of an arena capacity crowd), it didn't take long for the two to relax and begin to make the show feel like it was Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, and 18,000 of their closest friends. Eventually, they displayed a lot of the humor that made the two favorites on various "Saturday Night Live" episodes, such as during "Mrs. Robinson," when they obtained a person's cell phone and chatted with the person on the other end of the line while performing.

It was the typical night that you wished went on forever. And though it did end, it will certainly be remembered for that long.
